Teen Program
The State of Texas requires teens under 18 years old to complete a drivers education program consisting of:
PHASE I - Classroom (14-17 year old)
• 32 hours of classroom instruction and written skills & signs test (17 days, 2 hours per day, test on last day)
• After successfully completion student is eligible to apply for Learners Permit.
PHASE II - In-Car Training (aka Behind-the-Wheel) (15-17 year old)
• 14 hours of behind-the-wheel training (7 days, 1 hour of driving and 1 hour of observation per day)
• Student must also complete an additional 30 hours of drive time with a parent or qualifying driver AND complete 30 hr Log Sheet
PHASE III - DPS Skills Testing (aka Road Test) (16-18 year old)
• Student is at least 16 years of age AND has held Learner Permit for min of 6 months
• Upon successfully passing the DPS Road Test, student may apply for Provisional Drivers License
Students and parents can access student information 24/7 from any device. They can follow progress of their program, schedule lessons, upload permits, pay outstanding balances and more.
Carlton Driving School Course Options:
Complete Teen Program – package includes ALL three phases of Teen Drivers Education course and testing requirements to obtain Texas Drivers License (includes: Classroom & Behind-The-Wheel Course, DPS written exam and DPS Road Test).
Register Complete Teen Program
Classroom Course Only – includes 32 Hours of Classroom instruction (2 hours per day for 16 days) and the DPS written test (on 17th day). Course is available in-person, virtual classroom and online.

Behind-The-Wheel Only – includes 14 hours of behind-the-wheel training (2 hours per day for 7 days), included is use of school's car with instructor safety brake, gas & insurance provided. This is a structured training program covering rules and skills like: parallel parking, intersections, lane changes, etc. This is if you have completed ALL 32 Hours of Classroom instruction AND have received Learner Permit.
Register Behind-The-Wheel Only
Teen Private Lesson or Assessment – 1on1 private lesson or driving assessment available by the hour. Students must have completed ALL 32 Hours of classroom instruction and have their "Learners Permit".
Follow progress of your program, schedule lessons, pay balances and more, from any device.
In car evaluations sent to parents and students as soon as instructor completes the lessons.
Students and parents can access student information 24/7 from the Student Portal.
